“I have lifted weights most of my life and thought I knew what I was doing. For the past 30 years, I have been a distance runner. It began in high school cross country and has developed into a love of trail marathons. I began lifting weights with my dad when I was 13. I have consistently lifted to keep myself strong for running. I even hire personal trainers sometimes to help get me out of my usual routines. I thought after all of this I understood how to lift. Then, a couple years ago, I broke my ankle while running on a trail. I had been wanting to increase my posterior chain strength and decided the time while injured was a great opportunity to do so. Only, I didn’t really know how. I decided to get the help of Jonathan Garcia. I consistently followed the plan he gave me. It was completely different than anything I had tried before. After a couple months, my body was really transforming. I finally have glutes! I have learned so many different exercises and have been challenged to do things I never thought I could. After a year of struggling with this broken ankle and spending way too much time in a brace, I was able to start running again. I was very surprised at how strong I have become from the training. I hardly missed a beat. The weaknesses I have had for my entire life are strong. I have found that I prefer the online training because I have 3 kids and I am constantly trying to fit gym time into my day. This gives me the flexibility to go when I can without trying to plan on meeting someone. It also kept me on track through COVID gym shut downs to have challenging exercises and accountability at home. I send many videos and questions to Jonathan and he is great at getting back to me with productive feedback and encouragement to master the movements that are a challenge. I also love that it is tailored to my changing needs. If I am going on vacation with no access to a gym, he is able to provide me with workouts to keep me on track while I’m gone. Now that I am back to running he is incorporating my half marathon training into the plan. “I highly recommend Jonathan Garcia as a coach. As a serious age-group endurance athlete, I have found Jonathan to be incredibly knowledgeable of the physical and mental aspects of triathlon. He is also very accommodating around the realities of life and adjusts workouts accordingly. Most importantly, he believes in me and my abilities – at times more than I do. In the four months I’ve worked with Jonathan I have already set a 5K PR (personal record), raced my first TT (time trial) and stood on the podium twice – once for a an age group win and another for a third place overall female. His periodic training plans allow me to get fast and strong, but also includes adequate rest for recovery. When an old injury started to rear its ugly head, Jonathan prescribed stretching and strength work that has now eliminated the problem. As much as I try to keep to each week’s workouts, things come up – illness, a last-minute meeting, or a fund opportunity. Jonathan is flexible and immediately accommodating. His openness to changing things around as needed helps me maintain a good life/work balance. Also, while training for an Ironman, he is acutely aware of the burnout that can occur. He is open to incorporating my other interests of rock climbing, skiing, and trail running into the mix. Lastly, Jonathan is incredible because he sets goals and workout objectives for me that I feel are out of my reach. However, time and time again I’m able to meet or surpass those expectations giving me the confidence to meet my long term goals.
